There is no easy answers here and the movie shoves it in your face.

 3/4

Last Night tries to explores how temptation could destroy a marriage while it does do that it’s not perfect.

The film’s intro begins with a marriage of three years between Joanna (Keira Knightley) and Michael (Sam Worthington). They go to a party hosted by Michael’s coworkers, and in the party there is a coworker who is very attractive. Laura (Eva Mendes) is the coworker and they are very attach which makes Joanna very jealous. She even finds out that there are going together to Philadelphia for a business trip. While they fight and he leaves for his trip she is left home and accidentally runs into a ex Alex (Guillaume Canet). They both go through temptation and the foundation of their marriage is tested.

What I like about Last Night is that it takes it’s subject very serious. It actually tries to explore the subject matter that is trying to convey. There are conversations about being faithful, past relationships and even about cheating. It’s calm and not hyperactive like most romantic comedies. It doesn’t tried to force it’s characters in cliché trappings of the genre. There is no easy answers here and the movie shoves it in your face. You might not like it but it’s life.

The acting is very good, Worthington and Knightley does a good job of a couple who married too young and early. There are on a brink where there a lot of things need to be said and it’s being kept in. The actors who played the roles of the temptation did very good. They both made the roles what was needed for the narrative.

The only problem I had with the film is that it dosent go futher with the premise and the subject matter I would love to see more topics being talked about. Or maybe more scenes between Michael and Laura. The movie focuses more on Joanna and Alex then on them. As well as the characters are not compelling enough to remember.

Even though with those flaws, the best thing going for it is honesty. It gives you the truth in your face.

  1. I've not heard too much about this but it does sound quite engaging, it sounds like it has been steered away from the typical relationship based film. I will keep an eye out for it. Great review Miguel!
